Hilton Alves Brings the Power of the Ocean to Hawaii School Through Giant Mural

With the completion of a giant wave depicted on a 36 feet high mural, marine artist and surfer Hilton Alves celebrated Earth Day 2010 at Kahuku High and Intermediate School on Oahu. Using over 40 gallons of paint, the artist surprised observers day after day with the evolution of the massive mural. "In the early days no one understood anything, because what you saw was a big wall painted in shades of blue. As I began to paint the details, the wave came alive” says the artist. In just five days, Hilton completed this new mural, which depicts the power of nature as a perfect wave and the happiness of sea life as racing dolphins.

Over the two-week period beginning on April 14th, the artist enlisted the help of students to paint a second wall aimed at promoting art and environmental preservation in Hawaii schools. As part of Hilton’s Surf Art Kids Project, students could learn painting techniques, contribute something unique to the school and celebrate Earth Day. Hilton began this wall with an underwater background and students added fishes, turtles, coral and other sea life. "Many students have been inspired by seeing me paint and their inspiration showed on the wall we painted together,” says Hilton.

With the support of the U.S. Army, Kahuku High and Intermediate School, Bob's Equipment, volunteers, and members of the community, Hilton celebrates another step in his international career as an artist. "I thank everyone involved in the Surf Art Kids Project here. The positive energy I received during the days of painting certainly shows in the mural,” concludes the artist. With these two new works, Hilton has completed ten murals in Oahu schools and welcomes the opportunity to spread his project to other schools.

Power of the Ocean to Be Featured in 3-Story Hilton Alves Mural at Kahuku High School

Kahuku, HI – On Tuesday, April 13th Artist Hilton Alves will begin work on a massive 3-story mural at Kahuku High School. The mural is Alves’ 9th in an O`ahu school and will be completed in time to commemorate Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary on April, 22nd and Kahuku High School’s Make a Difference Day on April. 17th. Alves plans on completing the mural, weather permitting, by Saturday, April 17th while volunteers, students and community members will be participating in the school’s Make a Difference Day activities.

The 36 x 60 foot mural will feature the power of the ocean through a lively depiction of dolphins racing on a big wave typical of famous north shore surf spots. The mural is part of Alves’ Surf Art Kids Project designed to expose children and youth to environmental awareness and foster in them a respect and love for the ocean through art. “ I want to inspire all who see the mural to appreciate the special ocean environment the Hawai`i has and to think about ways we can help to protect and preserve it…” Alves says. In describing his inspiration for the mural Alves states, “the big wave represents the power of nature and the dolphins represent the life and happiness of ocean creatures.” The mural is poised to spread this message to many as it will face Kahuku High Schools famed football field and the Kahuku District Park.

Ricardo Taveira, PADI Master Scuba Dive Trainer and Underwater Videographer, will partner with Alves to help educate the students and community about ways we can all protect our ocean. Originally from Brazil, Taveira has worked and lived in places like Japan, Canada, and the Philippines and has called the north shore of O`ahu home since 2005. Taveira will be on hand during the creation of the mural to document Alves’ work for a future documentary and to talk with visitors. Everyone is invited to be a part of this momentous event by visiting Kahuku High School to experience the live art and by seeing updates on the Surf Art Kids blog at www.surfartkids.theartofhilton.com.

Celebrating the Arts 2010 - Sunset Beach Elementary School

Marine Artist Hilton Alves celebrated his 30th birthday, on February 19th, creating art with students at Sunset Beach Elementary School. Hilton worked together with the students to create 3 large ocean themed panel murals as part of the school's Supporting the Arts Program that is aimed at funding art and music programs at the school. Other artists such as Wyland, Jake Shimabikuro, Paula Fuga, Clark Little and Clark Takashima will be volunteering their time and resources for Kids Art Days where students will learn and create photography, printmaking, ceramics and painting. The week ends on Sunday, February 26th with a fundraising gala at Waimea Valley Pikake Pavilion from 6 - 10 p.m. The event will feature live music, pupus, cash bar and a silent auction and is open to the public with a $10 cover charge.

This week Hilton will also travel to Brazil to promote his new paintings and a Surf Art Kids event in his hometown. Upon his return in March, Surf Art Kids will be planning for it's Earth Day mural at Kahuku High School. The first of several Kahuku High murals will be painted from April 19th thru the 26th and will depict a monster wave with racing dolphins. Stay tuned for more Surf Art Kids news to come!

On February 13, 2010 Surf Art Kids' Hilton Alves and Jessica DelaCruz participated in the annual Kokua Hawai'i Foundation beach clean-up at Malaekahana State Park. There were over 400 volunteers working together to clean the beach and save marine wildlife. The event was sponsored by Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, Star 101.9, BYUH SIFE and the Surfrider Foundation Hawaii Chapter.

July 23, 2009 – Honolulu, HI – This Saturday Marine Artist and Waterman Hilton Alves, also the founder of the Surf Art Kids Project, will partner with Project Pure Light at its fundraising event at Don Ho’s Island Grill. The event will be held from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm and will benefit Project Pure Light. Hilton Alves will be putting the finishing touches an original paddling themed painting live, which will be auctioned off at the event. Linking art with social responsibility, Alves will be donating half of all art proceeds of the day to Project Pure light including proceeds from the original art piece auction. Tickets to the event will be available at the door for $25 dollars and all are welcomed to the event.

Pure Light Project Pure Light is a non-profit organization that was created in 2002 to allow physically, mentally and emotionally challenged individuals the opportunity to participate in ocean recreation and sports programs, primarily through Hawaiian outrigger canoes. These programs are aimed at the preservation, development and enhancement of the diversity of thought, culture and heritage within Hawai’i. Project Pure Light is a program with an emphasis on safety and fun for adaptive paddlers of all ages. Currently programs are available on O'ahu and in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai'i.

"My goal is to take art everywhere and make a difference in the lives of people involved directly and indirectly. I am delighted to return the aloha I’ve received from the Hawaiian community," says Alves.

On March 29th Hilton began the second leg of his Surf Art Kids Tour of 2009 at La’ie Elementary School. The first of two murals Hilton is painting at La’ie is 14 x 50 feet. This mural features a heart shaped reef cave and sandy ocean bottom and Hilton will be adding fish, coral and other marine life in the next several days.

Hilton says he designed the reef in this fashion, “to show children [his] respect for the sea and its inhabitants.” During the intervals between the classes, Hilton was able to share this message with the many students who came to watch the artist in action. He states, “I was happy to help inspire the youth and I’m excited that they will be helping me to paint the second mural early next week.”

Hilton was also honored to help judge a poster contest, which attracted 300 entrants from the school. With the theme, “Our La’ie Bay” students create posters demonstrating their awareness of the need to protect marine life and ocean resources. Out of 300 entries 12 will be awarded for their posters at a special assembly on June 3rd. Made by children from ages 4 to 11, the posters impressed Hilton for the attention to details, creativity, important messages and compassion for the future they possessed. Winners will receive artwork by Hilton and prizes donated by Go Nuts Hawai’i.

The mural wall became a gathering place for interested students during lunchtime. Hilton spent 45 minutes to demonstrate his drawing techniques for eager students, sign autographs and talk with the children about saving the ocean and marine life. Hilton exclaims, “I was inspired seeing the joy these children are having with the new look of the school and having me share my talents and message with them.”

Hilton Alves to Honor Hawaiian Tradition With Murals at La’ie Elementary School

Beginning on May 29th and culminating on June 3rd, marine artist and waterman Hilton Alves will paint two murals at La’ie Elementary School, as part of his Surf Art Kids Hawai’i Tour 2009. The themes of this mural project are "Hukilau" and “Our La’ie Bay” and will include a poster contest for students to demonstrate understanding of marine life and protecting the environment. The artist will paint the first mural as homage to the community and the hukilau tradition and to further Surf Art Kids’ message of environmental protection. The second mural will be painted with the help of La’ie Elementary School’s 600 students. On June 3rd the murals will be completed and the student winners of the poster contest will be announced at a special assembly. Winners of the poster contest will receive prizes donated by Go Nuts Hawai’i, The Art of Hilton and Da Hui and BYU Hawai’i is donating scaffolding for the mural.

In La’ie, hukilau was performed weekly during the 1940’s thru the 1970’s and would include sharing of the fish harvest, lu’au, dance, arts and crafts and community celebration. "Huki" means pull and "Lau" are the wavering Ti leaves attached to the netting system used to catch fish in large quantities to feed the community. In ancient Hawai’i, hukilau was an example of sustainability and community based food production and harvest. In recent years, the diversion of a nearby stream has exposed reef and polluted the bay leaving less fish and decreasing the occurrence of hukilau to several times a year.

On May 25th, Alves participated in the annual hukilau at La’ie organized by the Hamana Beach Hukilau Crew to experience the practice first hand and gain inspiration. The artist plans to include fish commonly fished in hukilau in his murals and will teach students painting techniques in the process. The students have been preparing for the mural with painting demonstrations by the artist, talks and demonstrations by local historians and lessons on marine life. The community is invited to the event and to be a part of creating the mural.
